Recently, I moved to a new apartment. Although I own very few belongings I wanted to further minimized them during the move, the process still took quite a bit of time. Despite having fewer items than a typical household, It took me a lot of time to pack and unpack, leaving little time for anything else. Finally, I have a moment to write this post.
On the walk to my new apartment, I passed by a large water place. It’s usually windy there, but that day, there is no wind and the water surface was perfectly still.
Under the intense summer sun, it felt incredibly hot, but observing the calm water brought a surprising sense of tranquility to my mind.
The phrase “明鏡止水” (Meikyo Shisui) came to mind. “明鏡” means a polished mirror, and “止水” refers to still water. Together, they describe a state of mind that is as clear and serene as a polished mirror or a calm, undisturbed water surface—a beautiful concept signifying a heart free of distractions and impurities.
Perhaps because I was so mentally exhausted from the move, the sight of the still water brought an astonishing peace to my mind.
As I stood there, a breeze began to ripple the water surface, and it felt as if it were gently nudging me forward into this new chapter of life, filling me with excitement.
