Yakuotoshi: Finding the Positive Side of Life’s Unplanned Losses

In Japan, there’s a concept called yakuotoshi, or “warding off misfortune.” The idea is that small mishaps—like losing money or having a minor accident—serve as a way to ‘shed’ bad luck, protecting us from something more serious down the road.

Growing up, my father often reminded me of this whenever something unfortunate happened, saying, “It’s yakuotoshi!” Although I’m naturally cautious and not always the most optimistic, I think his words helped me develop a habit of seeing the positive side, even in difficult moments.

So, while unexpected losses or setbacks can feel discouraging, viewing them as yakuotoshi adds a hopeful perspective. It’s a reminder that these moments might be protecting us from larger misfortune, making it a little easier to move forward.

What about you—do you have any practices or perspectives that help you stay positive through life’s ups and downs?

The illustration shows a fun, pop-style artwork I created before. This piece depicts the character “yaku (misfortune)” trying to flee from a Pac-Man-like character that ‘eats away’ the bad luck.
