As a calligrapher, I've always been fascinated by the depth inherent in kanji, particularly those that resonate deeply with our daily lives and philosophical contemplations. Today, I want to share with you one of my works, centered around the kanji "道" (Michi/Do), which translates "the way" in English.
In Japanese culture, the concept of "道" permeates various disciplines, from the martial path of Bushido and the physical and mental discipline of Judo, to the ceremonial art of Tea Ceremony and, of course, the expressive world of Shodo (calligraphy). Each of these paths offers a unique journey towards mastery and understanding, reflecting the diverse interpretations and applications of "道" in our lives.
However, the kanji "道" embodies more than just a path or journey. It encapsulates the contrasting experiences of liberation and confinement that accompany any quest for moral and intellectual development. In my calligraphy, I sought to represent these dual aspects of "道". The piece is deliberately divided into two sections: on the left, the radical (shinnyo) symbolizes an invitation to ascend, to rise above the mundane and reach for a higher spiritual understanding. Conversely, the right side of the kanji closes in, resembling a cage that entraps those who rigidly and mistakenly adhere to the traditions without understanding their underlying essence.
This artwork is a visual exploration of the idea that while the path of "道" can lead to enlightenment and freedom for those who navigate its challenges with wisdom and flexibility, it can also become a prison of tradition and dogma for those who follow without question. It's a reminder that the journey of "道" is as much about the way we walk the path as it is about the destination.
