Liberté, égalité, fraternité - Calligraphy in France

I am very happy that one of my calligraphies is permanently displayed in the city hall of Vaison La Romaine, in Provence.

Vaison la Romaine is a town located in the South of France. Although small in size, it has an amazing cultural heritage and hosts several international festivals on a regular basis:

  • Roman ruins with 2000-year old functioning amphitheater and bridge

  • Museum of archeology

  • A Middle-age High Town with 2 cathedrals and a castle

  • A Provencal market that dates back 15th century

  • International Dance Festival every year with world famous choreographers and dancers

  • International Choir Festival

  • The famous “tour de France” race also often goes or stops there

  • Beautiful nature, Amazing food and nice weather :-)

I went to Vaison several times, and it is always a delight.Last time, I worked on a calligraphy that would represent the bridging of many cultures through art, and also essential French values. But because it was to be displayed in the modern wing of the city hall, I decided to stay away from a traditional scroll and paper type, and do something with a slight “street art” taste instead.

The artwork shows the words “自由、平等、友愛” (Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité), with the French tri-color blue, white & red.Calligraphy is of course Chinese and Japanese in essence, but it can shine across, and blend in, every culture.

It is an honor to have my calligraphy contribute to the rich cultural tapestry of this historic town, and to be part of this beautiful expression of international friendship.
