In the realm of Japanese aesthetics, “Ma” (間) is far more than just an empty space or gap—it’s a concept of profound significance. “Ma” exists between sounds, between words, and even within human relationships. It’s the art of finding meaning and potential in silence, a beauty that deepens in stillness.
This concept of “Ma” gains power by leaving intentional space, drawing out the imagination of the viewer or listener. In practices like tea ceremony and Noh theater, it’s the pauses—the moments of stillness—that create the strongest impressions. In Japanese art and culture, “Ma” is the space or time that amplifies the energy of what is yet to unfold.
My artwork “Between 0 and 1” is deeply rooted in this idea of “Ma.” Part of a series by the same name, this piece draws on the continuous seal marks and vertical text to evoke the flowing digital code from the movie The Matrix. The theme of this piece is “typhoon.” The vertical text is an excerpt from the typhoon chapter of The Tale of Genji, while the bold kanji character at the center is “Zen.” Even Zen, however, is shown as disturbed by the violent storm of the typhoon. The contrast between the calmness of the vertical text and the chaos that engulfs Zen mirrors the essence of “Ma” in this piece.
Between 0 and 1 lies infinite possibility—in those gaps may reside a beauty and meaning we often overlook. I hope this artwork helps you discover the “Ma” within yourself.
