Many foreigners are often surprised by the level of detailed service they receive in Japanese hair salons. While the phrase “the customer is king” might sound a bit outdated today, there’s certainly a spirit of ensuring that clients relax and enjoy their time. What truly stands out, though, is the craftsman-like dedication of Japanese hairstylists. Every step of the process reflects their meticulous attention to detail and deep pride in their work. From adjusting the cutting cape to make sure it’s not too tight around the neck, to offering warm towels at the shampoo station and serving drinks, the service is truly customer-first. They take time to thoroughly discuss the desired hairstyle, ensuring that every cut reflects both the client’s wishes and the stylist’s own sense of artistry. It’s a perfect blend of service and craftsmanship.
On the other hand, my experience in French salons has been a completely different story! Stylists there will boldly tell you what suits you, and once the consultation is over, you’re essentially at the mercy of their artistic vision. While they may offer drinks, the meticulous attentiveness seen in Japan is less common. You might be asked to tilt your head in different directions, lift your chin, or even stand up for part of the cut. The stylist is truly the artist, and the client becomes part of their creation. It’s all about the stylist here (at least, based on my experience—I’m sure there are exceptions!). Yet, this approach was so refreshing, and the results? Absolutely stunning! I can’t go often, but I always leave feeling grateful.
