Calligraphy…
Is it just about Ink and paper?
I was reading recently a post by Chris Do and it made me think:
The way we define our work shapes how others perceive not just the art but the artist as well. It's crucial, then, to choose our titles with deliberate thought.
Consider this:
I describe myself as a Japanese calligrapher.
A calligrapher produces calligraphies.
That's a start, but is that all? Is thatt the full picture?
In each brush stroke, we channel history, emotion, philosophy, and aesthetic. When we work with clients or teach students, we're not just guiding them in marking characters on a white page. We're helping them to connect with a tradition, express a mood, convey a message, display a status, create an ambiance, understand a culture, and much more.
So, shouldn't our title reflect the breadth and depth of our work? I want to think more deeply about what I do, about the vastness it encompasses, and adopt a title that truly represents my role.

I'm curious, what title do you use that encapsulates all that you bring to your own field?
