Today, I’d like to share some insights into my creative process.
Calligraphy often revolves around words, which can lead to similar-looking pieces. As an artist, this can sometimes feel restrictive, making me want to create something different.
I thought it would be interesting to infuse the ultra-analog art of calligraphy with the flavor of the digital world, which led to a series I named "Between 0 and 1."
I am presenting you one artwork from that series. Its inspiration came from two main sources:- One of my favorite movies, "The Matrix." —> In traditional calligraphy, it's common to use up to four seals. Here I used an unusually high number of seals to represent the Matrix's digital rain. I also brushed very fine texts parallel to the seals in order to accentuate the digital rain effect.
- The main character is "宇," meaning "infinite space," and is used in words like “cosmos”. In fact when I was a kid I was fascinated by Carl Sagan’s TV show Cosmos. I discovered recently that it was a huge TV success in Japan and That Carl Sagan himself spent quite some time here to promote the show. I never missed an episode that’s for sure! I was also a big fan of his novel "Contact”.
That’s why I wanted to do an homage artwork. So the main calligraphy represents the cosmos, and the vertical fine text in the style of Matrix’s digital rain is actually a quote from Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" that I translated.
Of course I liked Neil deGrasse Tyson’s “Cosmos”, but I think my favorite will always be Carl’s.
